Easter Island Outdoor Activities

Overview

Visitors don’t come to Easter Island specifically for the beaches, the hiking, or the diving – the point is the history – but once here, you’ll want to make time for these activities as well. Underwater visibility off the island’s coast is the best in the world at up to more 200 feet, and while the island’s sandy strands can’t compete with Tahiti’s, they’re still enticing places to swim, picnic, and sunbathe. Breaking away from a guided tour for an afternoon of hiking amongst the windswept hills and moai remains is one of the best ways to experience the strange solitariness of the island.

Scuba Diving
Without a coral reef, Easter Island can’t support the same plethora of tropical fish as its Polynesian sisters. Nonetheless, scuba diving here is practically a religious experience thanks to its clear waters (due to the lack of plankton, visibility extends up to 200 feet in the 70-degree ocean). Horseback riding
You can’t go two feet on Easter Island without encountering a horse (locals estimate there are about 10,000 horses, compared to a human population of 3,500). Consequently, it feels natural to tour the island on horseback. While many of the four-legged beasts are semi-wild, Aku Aku Turismo owns a number of calm, domesticated horses that are perfect for exploring moai platforms and archaeologi

Hiking around the north coast of the island
The north coast of the island lends itself to do-it-yourself afternoon hikes, with two trails that wind wind their way through the hills past ahu and toppled moai. Ask a taxi to drop you off at the trailhead north of the village and give yourself five hours to trek the length of the route to Anakena Beach. Bring plenty of water and snacks (there are no vendors along the paths).

Playa Ovahe
The beach at Anakena is striking for its moai, but if you’re simply seeking a sea-and-sand escape, duck over to intimate, secluded Playa Ovahe, just east of Anakena. The sparkling white strand, refreshingly free of crowds, fronts clear, calm waters that are great for swimming.
