Ensenada Things To Do

Things To Do

The sleepy Mexican seaside image is lost on Ensenada. Bodega hopping and giant blowholes aside, adrenaline junkies flock here for sport fishing, kayaking, horseback riding, golfing, hiking, diving, and any other heart pounding activity that only a Baja canvas could provide.

La Bufadora
Ensenada’s favorite site literally translates as the “buffalo snort.” The natural sea spout, which is carved by the ocean in a rock face not far from the tip of the Punta Banda peninsula, shoots water more than 70 feet into the air like a whale. Observation decks and a small botanical garden were added in 2006.

Bodegas de Santo Tomás great value
Wine making and sampling rank high among preferred pastimes for Ensenadans. While most bodegas (wineries) are along highway 3 outside of town, the Santo Tomás Winery, the second oldest still operating in Mexico (it’s been producing local wine since 1888), is right in town. Forty-five minute tours in English take you through the process, starting with grape and ending with samples (free tours run Mon-Sat 9am-5pm; Sun 10am-4pm).

Popular beaches
Downtown Ensenada is mainly a port city with not much of any beach scene, but head north or south 5-20 miles and you’ll come to first rate sun worshipping spots like Playa Estero, Playa Hermosa, and Playa El Faro (all good for swimming and snorkeling) and Playa San Miguel – a better bet for surfing.

Kayaking smart splurge
Paddling is an ideal way to explore Baja’s rocky coastline. Ecotur runs expeditions to Bahia de Los Angeles, stopping at sea caves and sea lion rookeries en route.

Centro Cívico, Social, y Cultura
The swanky Mediterranean structure near the malécon was once the Riviera del Pacífico, a resort and casino frequented by ‘30s Hollywood elites and celebrities such as William Randolph Hearst and Myrna Loy. Gardens, murals, a fine art gallery, and opulent ballrooms all tell the story of the Ensenada of yesteryear. Even when there’s no event planned you’re welcome to roam the halls and explore the gallery.

GaleriAH
Since 2005 GaleriAH has been leading the arts scene in Ensenada, paving the way for up-and-coming Oaxacan and Bajan artists. This is a rare find, as fine contemporary art from artists of this caliber is not common in Baja’s often gritty north.
