Don’t expect Marrakech’s party scene in conservative Fez. Rocking nightlife doesn’t exist here (except at Moroccan weddings, which last all night). While there are bars in the Ville Nouvelle, they are largely smarmy places full of boozing men and washed-up prostitutes. Your best bet for stylish drinks is at guesthouses and riads in the medina or at the Ville Nouvelle’s big hotels.
Hotel Menzeh Zalagh Students and teachers from the nearby Arabic language school mingle with hotel guests during the popular weekday happy hours (5-7pm) at this Ville Nouvelle hotel. Sip a cold beer and soak in some of the best views of the medina from the outdoor terrace. Ville Nouvelle; 10 Rue Mohammed Diouri; 011-212-35-62-55-31
Hotel Mounia This hotel bar in the Ville Nouvelle is a good spot to chill with friends while puffing on the water pipe and enjoying a glass of Moroccan wine. Ville Nouvelle; 60 Blvd. Zerktouni; 011-212-55-62-48-38; www.hotelmouniafes.ma (French only)
Le Phoebus Located inside the Jnan Palace, Le Phoebus is Fez’ best nightlife scene. Expect a dance floor, a piano bar, and a crowd that’s just as eager to move to pumping Euro-pop as they are to North African rai beats. Ville Nouvelle; Jnan Palace; Ave. Ahmed Chaouki
