France: When To Go

Peak Season: June to August Summer is popular throughout France, but can be hot, overly crowded (expect lots of kids on school break) – and expensive. Ample daylight hours (sunset occurs as late as 10.30pm) allow for plenty of sightseeing. If you’re coming to swim, this is prime time.

Off Season: October to April Winter for most of France is cold and dark, although the Riviera and southern regions are still pleasant (averaging 50°F). Most hotels offer lower rates, and fewer crowds make sights more accessible, although some establishments close. One exception is the Alps region, which burst to life in winter with skiers.

Sweet Spot: May; September Overall, springtime and early fall are best. Prices are lower, temperatures are generally pleasant, and the crowds are refreshingly absent. May offers blooming fields; September and October bring grape, olive harvests, and busy cultural calendars. Still, make reservations in advance to avoid disappointment.
