Grand Canyon Skywalk
The Hualapai Tribe-commissioned Skywalk opened to mixed reviews in March 2007 (some believe the area should not have been developed). Its see-through, horseshoe-shaped bridge is located 4,000 feet above the base of the canyon.

Whitewater rafting
Whitewater rafting on the Colorado River has long been high on the list for adventure seekers. Several outfitters are available, but we recommend Grand Canyon Tour Company; reserve in advance. Expert rafters who want to go it alone must request a permit from the park service (800-959-9164).

Hiking
Of the many trails that lead into the canyon, the most popular are the 5.6-mile South Kaibab Trail and the 9.7-mile Bright Angel Trail. Warning: hiking into the canyon can be strenuous – children and inexperienced hikers shouldn’t venture too far down.

Horseback riding
Why hike when you can ride? Guided horseback tours take visitors on rides through the Kaibab National Forest and along the canyon’s rim, which offers views of the canyon.

Hitch a ride on a mule
Travelers have been descending into the canyon on these sure-footed mammals for a century. Ride the mules down to the Colorado River, eat and stay at the Phantom Ranch, and return the next day.
