Expect crowds and higher rates as the Grand Canyon, especially the popular South Rim, is a favorite summer destination. Temperatures on the rim can push 100 degrees, so bring water, sunscreen, and hats. Book ahead.
Off Season: November to April
During this time, many tour services and restaurants close, temperatures can drop below freezing, and hiking can be dangerous due to ice and winds. The North Rim is closed entirely from mid-October to mid-May due to snow.
Sweet Spot: September to October
Tour operators and services are still open, crowds have thinned, and the weather is temperate (with daytime temps in the mid-80s and nighttime temps in the mid-50s). You’ll also catch some fall foliage as the cottonwoods turn yellow against the red cliffs.
