Hong Kong Neighborhoods

Neighborhoods

While Hong Kong is made up of Kowloon, the New Territories, and 234 other outlying islands, its real hustle and bustle takes place in the following eight neighborhoods on the northern strip of tiny Hong Kong Island (and the southern tip of Kowloon).

Central
This pulsing business and commercial district is home to towering buildings, financial headquarters, and throngs of office workers – as well as the party-hearty hubs of the mini-districts Lan Kwai Fong and SoHo.
Wan Chai
The bawdy stomping ground of Richard Mason’s fictional prostitute, Suzie Wong, has come a long way! Narrow alleyways support mini-cottage industries and there’s a lively market. The cylindrical Hopewell Center provides awesome city views.
Sheung Wan
Sheung Wan still bears a few remnants of its traditional past – creaky trams run down Des Voeux Road and jars of pungent Chinese herbs and medicines line the counters of tiny stores.
Causeway Bay
Causeway Bay’s glitzy malls and posh department stores draw crowds of spenders, while the lush greenery of Victoria Park and the hushed hallways of the Central Library make for a quiet retreat.
Southside (Stanley and Repulse Bay)
Largely residential, the Southside of Hong Kong boasts blue bays and sunny beaches. The sandy arc of Repulse Bay deserves a stroll for its unconventional temple (dubbed The Lifesaving Club), and attractive seafront.
Aberdeen
Though home to some rather drab tower blocks, Aberdeen’s harbor front makes for fantastic strolling. It’s also home to a plethora of worthy, floating seafood restaurants.
The Peak
Heart-stopping panoramas define this ritzy summit, one of the priciest places in the city to live. There are also some challenging walks and hikes to be had (and, this being Hong Kong, a number of shops as well.)
Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon)
A seven-minute ferry ride from Hong Kong Island, sprawling Tsim Sha Tsui is packed with eating, drinking, shopping, and sleeping establishments. Its harbor affords spectacular city skyline views, especially after dark.
