Technically in the ‘burbs, self-sufficient Woodlands is a huge master-planned community built in 2003. Its worth visiting for its 108 parks, six golf courses, and fine shopping and dining establishments.
Montrose
Houston’s most flamboyant neighborhood is an artsy, eclectic enclave near downtown. Art galleries, coffee shops, and ethnic restaurants define Westheimer, its main street.
Houston Heights
This quirky neighborhood close to downtown has “half” streets (after 6th street comes 6½ street), historic mansions next to tiny cottages, popular clubs, and restaurants.
River Oaks
The nouveau riche converge with old oil money and political royalty (including the Bush family) in River Oaks. During the winter holidays, the light displays are impressive.
Rice Village
A college student and hipster mecca, Rice University is the focus of this aptly named area. There aren’t many folks over 30 here, but all ages enjoy Morningside Drive’s bars.
Downtown
Downtown houses Houston Texans football, Rockets basketball, and Astros baseball. It also shelters a thriving, well-funded arts/museum district and top restaurants. No wonder rents here are among Houston’s highest.
