Today it is hard to believe that this luxury palace, and one of Istanbul’s best hotels, once housed dissidents and political prisoners (it was the inspiration for Midnight Express). Its position in Sultanahmet is unbeatable, just steps from the Blue Mosque and the rest of the city’s main attractions, but once you enter inside you are quickly removed from the crowds nearby. Rooms are large and very comfortable though not particularly Turkish in their design. The other possible drawback is that the property has no pool, but you’ll probably be so busy sightseeing you won’t care – and there are traditional baths nearby.
