The Palácio Belmonte is a truly remarkable property, often celebrated as one of the world’s best and most interesting hotels. It’s located on the site of an ancient (as in, 100 B.C.) palace on an Alfama hilltop near St. George’s Castle. There are eleven impressive suites, and… more no two are alike. The Padre Humalaya suite is perched in a vaulted Roman tower and has 360-degree views; the Gil Vicente suite has a garden and three terraces. The library contains thousands of volumes; the music room has gorgeous old Portuguese tiles. This is not a typical tourist hotel with amenities like room service. Everything is very discreet, designed to give guests the feeling of being in a stunning home.
