Ljubljana Things To Do

Smart Splurge    Great Value
Ljubljana Grad
Perched on a hill overlooking the city, this 15th-century Habsburg castle is a Ljubljana must. Visit the Erasmus Tower (once a noble prison), see a 2,000-year-old Roman well, and head to the top of the Viewing Tower for stellar views of the Alps. Admission to the castle is free; you could hike up to the entrance, but we recommend the funicular.

Tivoli Park

Ljubljana’s largest park covers almost two square miles. Both the original 1813 designer (French engineer J. Blanchard) and the later 1933 designer (architect Jože Plečnik) endowed the park with pleasant details; stroll the lovely chestnut-tree-lined promenades, sit by the 19th-century fish pond, or take in a concert or sporting event at the Dvorana Tivoli arena (Celovška cesta 25).

Take a walking tour of the city
The Ljubljana Tourist Information Centre offers a variety of guided walking tours to acquaint visitors with the city. Most tours leave from Town Hall and last about two hours, taking in sites like the Ljubjlana grad (the city’s 15th-century castle) and the Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture of the old city center.

National Museum of Contemporary History
Spend an afternoon exploring Slovenia’s history from the 20th century through today, including Slovenia’s establishment as an independent state in 1991. The collection spans historical items such as military weapons, postcards, period art, and photographs. The circa 1755 Cekin Mansion in which the museum is located is also a fine historical specimen in its own right.
