Although the island does have a small airport, most people arrive by ferry, which is only 45 minutes (9 miles) from Woods Hole, Massachusetts (75 miles from Boston). During peak travel times, arrive at least a half an hour before departure as ferries fill up quickly.

Although it is possible to bring cars over by ferry, having four wheels is not necessary and can actually be a hindrance (parking can be difficult during the busy summer). Navigate the island by bike instead – either bring your own or rent one there.

Occasionally, jellyfish appear in the ocean, but don’t let them keep you from swimming – their bite is mild and short lasting (locals laugh at timid visitors). Only the truly fearless, however, should go windsurfing when they’re out en force.

The sale of alcohol is prohibited everywhere on the island except in the “wet” towns of Edgartown and Oak Bluffs. BYOB is common in places where alcohol can’t be sold.

Looking for an evening of complimentary entertainment? Every other Sunday at 8pm during the summer, the Ocean Park Bandstand in the heart of Oak Bluffs hosts live performers (usually classical bands).

Before plunking yourself down on an appealing stretch of sand, take note of your surroundings and any “private property” signs – the majority of the island’s beaches are not open to the public.
