Towns

Although the Vineyard has six distinct towns, the land can be roughly divided into two areas—up-island and down-island. Down-island, which includes the towns of Tisbury, Edgartown and Oak Bluffs, is where 75-percent of year-round residents live. Up-island encompasses the quieter villages of West Tisbury, Chilmark and Aquinnah.

Tisbury
Also called “Vineyard Haven,” Martha’s Vineyard’s most populated town is where you’ll find the main ferry terminal, seaward-facing mansions, and a happening hodgepodge of shops, restaurants, and pubs.
Edgartown
Once an international whaling center, the island’s most exclusive town is now known for formidable homes, designer boutiques, Victorian guesthouses, great beaches, and gourmet restaurants.
Oak Bluffs
What began as a 19th-century Methodist enclave, is today a touristy, dock-front town famous for its colorful, gingerbread-esque cottages, lively nighttime entertainment and bustling shop- and restaurant-filled main drag.
West Tisbury
Smack in the middle of the island, West Tisbury has a rural, small-town feel. Here, you’ll find Alley’s General Store and the Field Gallery, which showcases local artist Tom Maley’s playful statue creations.
Chilmark
Once dedicated almost entirely to agriculture, there are still places where sheep dot sleepy Chilmark’s rolling fields and forests. To the north lies the postcard-perfect fishing village of Menemsha.
Aquinnah
Remote Aquinnah is home to the indigenous Wampanoag tribe. Gay Head Cliffs – a stunning, multi-hued clay precipice – overlooks the village and provides the backdrop to the island’s most spectacular sunsets.
