Hawaii’s second-largest isle, Maui lies 30 miles north of the Big Island and about 70 miles southeast of Oahu; it’s also just a short distance (10 and 12 miles, respectively) from Lanai and Molokai. Maui is divided into five regions: West, South, Central, East, and Upcountry.

West Maui
Sophisticated dining and shopping scenes lend an unexpectedly cosmopolitan flair to the old whaling town of Lahaina. Just north are the resort communities of Ka‘anapali, Na Pili, and Kapalua, home to some of Maui’s finest beaches and golf courses.
South Maui
Kihei offers the island’s most affordable accommodations, but its windswept beaches aren’t the best for swimming. Instead, drive 10 miles south, past several shopping centers, to reach the pristine white-sand beaches at the handsomely groomed Wailea resort.
Central Maui
The port town of Kahului is where many Maui residents take care of daily chores – buying groceries, banking, shopping, etc. The main airport is also here.
East Maui
Bookended by the hippie beach town of Paia and the tiny slice of paradise known as Hana, East Maui’s verdant rainforest is coupled with breathtaking coastal views. The Road to Hana, with waterfalls around every corner, is the ultimate Sunday drive.
Upcountry
The center of Maui’s paniolo (cowboy) culture, the towns of Makawao, Kula, and Pukalani are full of laidback country charm. The higher elevation brings cool, starry nights.
