Middle East Tips

Visas
You can obtain visas upon arrival at most countries; the exceptions include Yemen and Syria. Visit their websites for more information on visa procedures.
Stamps from Israel
Most countries in the region do not allow entry to visitors carrying Israeli stamps. For Egypt and Jordan, and unofficially Dubai, stamps are permissible. Do not take any chances with the others.
How to dress
Women should cover their arms and below the knee in most Arab countries, especially when visiting holy/religious sights. Western dress is entirely permissible in Tel Aviv and areas of Beirut. While the Gulf is lax, it’s best to lean toward the conservative side.
Hydrate
Never underestimate how much water you need to drink. One can dehydrate here quite quickly.
Language
English is spoken throughout the region, yet it doesn’t hurt to learn Arabic expressions like salaam aleikum (hello) and shukran (thank you).
Jet lag
There is a minimum 7-hour time difference between the East Coast and the Middle East, so it’s best to plan longer trips to the region rather then quick getaways. Expect a few days to adjust.
Ramadan
Those not observing this pious Islamic holiday may find traveling through the Gulf region difficult since smoking, drinking, and eating in public are forbidden until the break fast (iftar) ceremony. Some eateries operate during the day behind curtains or tinted windows. Exact dates of Ramadan vary from year to year – in 2008 it occurs throughout the month of September; in 2009 it takes place from August 21st to September 19th.
Eat like a local
You simply cannot go wrong with regional fare. Dietary laws in Israel (Kosher) and the Arab world (Halal) mean meat is clean and well prepared. Often the best restaurants are the least glamorous. Don’t be shy and ask locals for recommendations.
Gold Souk
Dubai is a great place to shop for gold jewelry, as the prices are very reasonable. What’s more, the Gold Souk is one of this city’s liveliest destinations. www.dubaiupclose.com
Bargaining
Hone your bargaining skills for all bazaar/souk experiences. Prices will start high, particularly for Westerners, but you can usually talk merchants down by a substantial amount.
Travel warnings
It’s a good idea to register online with each country’s American Embassy prior to visiting the region. While on the website, scan for any travel warnings. Always keep the embassy’s address and telephone numbers with you during your visit. www.usembassy.state.gov
Baalbek International Festival
During July and August of every year, this ancient town plays host to an international festival of music, opera, dance, theatre, and jazz. All events take place within the dramatically lit Roman Acropolis. www.baalbeck.org.lb
For thrill-seekers . . .
Lawrence of Arabia wannabes should enlist in Dubai-based Arabia Felix’s two-week-long safaris from Dubai through Oman into eastern Yemen. www.arabiafelixworld.com
