As the only major bilingual city in a French-speaking province that is three times the size of France, Montreal is unique. Just outside the city, a panoply of exclusively French-Canadian experiences can be had, from epicurean adventures to ski and hiking trips. So, rent a car or buy a bus ticket and head into the rural outskirts of the city.

Eastern Townships
Head southeast of the city to enjoy activities such as cycling and golfing in the summer and skiing and snowmobiling in the winter. The region is also an epicurean’s dream for its vineyards, cider houses, dairy farms, fruit orchards, and honey producers, many of which welcome visitors year-round.

Mont Tremblant
The region’s most acclaimed ski resort features 94 runs serviced by 13 lifts. An array of accommodations, from hotels to villas to weekend condos, can mostly be reached on foot from the pedestrian village, with its many bars and restaurants. Summer activities include golfing, hiking, and spa going.

Cockanagog
Adventurous and outdoorsy types may be drawn to this wildlife reserve, where dogsledding, ice fishing, and hunting are offered. Day rates are available for families wishing to try mushing (leading a pack of sled dogs), or you can stay overnight in rustic cabins.

Granby Zoo
Take the kids to the zoo! With more than 1,000 animals grouped into 200 species, it can take up to two days to see everything. In addition to the shark tanks, reptile zone, and monorail, Granby also features amusement park rides and a water park.

Lachine Rapids
Take to the St. Lawrence River’s frothy white waters aboard a big yellow raft or hydro-jet for an action-packed afternoon. You don’t need to have rafting experience – just a paddle and a life jacket, both of which are provided.

Sucrerie De La Montagne
“Sugaring off” is part of every Montrealer’s winter schedule. This sugar shack is open year-round, but it’s best to go in March or April when the maple trees are tapped for their sweet sap. Horse-drawn carriages take you through the maple groves before a huge meal covered in – you guessed it – maple syrup is served.
