Moscow Neighborhoods

Tverskaya
Moscow's main boulevard and environs bustle with shoppers, businesspeople, Kremlin functionaries, and hipster teenagers. One of the city’s few walkable areas, it gives a sense of Russia’s rising commercial power.
Patriarch's Ponds
Famous as the opening setting of Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita, this tree-lined pond is surrounded by exclusive apartments and restaurants. Find a park bench and take it all in.
Beliy Gorod
Literally “White City,” this central district encompasses the area around the Kremlin, which has many famous landmarks: the Bolshoi Theater, the Pushkin Museum, and the former KGB headquarters.
Zemlyanoy Gorod
“Earth City” encircles Beliy Gorod, and presents a slightly quieter side of the city, including Pushkin Square and many foreign embassy estates. See what remains of old Moscow on these interior lanes.
Red Square
Preserved through centuries of turmoil, this cobblestone expanse – with St. Basil’s at one end and the State Historical Museum at the other – is the main square in the life of Russia.
Kitay Gorod
East of Red Square, this 1,000-year-old district houses churches, palaces, and part of the original Kremlin wall. The area abuts the Moscow River, whose embankment offers sweeping, street-level city views.
