Taxis and rickshaws are prevalent across the city, making it easy to get around, but many cabdrivers will take tourists for a “ride,” so confirm the meter reading against a fare sheet.
Bombay to Mumbai
In 1995, the city officially changed its name, along with many of its streets and roads. Locals and taxi drivers still refer to many addresses by their old colonial names so ask around or at a concierge desk before heading out the door to avoid confusion.
You say marg I say street
Address listings often mention the word marg, which means street in Hindi.
Soak in the sun
Mumbai’s climate is decidedly tropical; avoid outings in the middle of the afternoon (between 1-3pm) when the sun’s rays can be almost lethal.
Function before form
While flashy Mumbai is an increasingly fashion-forward city, walking along the uneven streets and through dusty bazaars, you’ll do better in flats than high heels. So save the stilettos!
Bollywood studio tours
Though some studios do let the public come in by appointment, the tours are very unorganized and the studios are pretty out of the way (close to 2-hours away from the downtown area). You’re better off using your time to do something else.
