Munich Local Tips

Summer clothes
Make sure you have a few warm clothes, a rain-proof jacket, and a pair of sturdy shoes in summer, especially if you are heading for the mountains.
Forget cars!
The public transportation is excellent, so unless you’re visiting the countryside, don’t bother renting a car. Weekend day tickets can get you around Bavaria by train for very little. www.mvv-muenchen.de
The Beer Garden
Any Biergarten (beer garden) is a great way to meet the locals. You can bring your own food, even though some basics are usually available (spareribs, pork roast and the like). Drinks must be bought on the premises.
Money back
Germany has a 19% sales tax on goods abbreviated MWSt. If you are leaving the European Union with purchased goods, you can get a refund. Find more information on refunds by searching for "consular services" at www.germany.info
Beer business

Oktoberfest is fun, but expensive, so prepare yourself for peak prices city-wide. Also: Beer in Germany is stronger than in the U.S. and during the festival it is served in 1-quart glasses. Avoid getting carried away…literally.
