Munich: Neighborhoods

The Old Town The streets radiating from Marienplatz square are quintessential Munich: find Baroque churches and the old Royal Residence coexisting alongside ultra-chic boutiques, basic department stores, and all manner of eateries.

Schwabing The former home of Munich’s art scene is part student, part in-crowd. Trendy cafés share space with hip shops, bookstores, second-hand stores and on-the-hoof kebab places.

The English Garden This strip of land is home to joggers, sunbathers, students, and dog-owners. Meet friends at the Chinese Tower beer garden, go boating on Kleinhesseloher Lake, or surf on the single Eisbach wave.

Maxvorstadt The quarter designed by King Maximilian I harbors some of Europe’s finest museums, including the three “Pinakotheks,” the Lenbachhaus, and the sculpture-filled Glyptothek on Königsplatz, where you can take a break from antiquity.

Nymphenburg The summer residence of the Bavarian dukes (and later kings) is a grand palace just west of the city. Do not miss the extensive park behind it with its charming little pavilions.

Glockenbach Quarter This lively neighborhood is jam-packed with bars, designer hotels, nightclubs, and cool people from all walks of life. The theater on Gärtnerplatz and the local cemetery are the central focus.
