Native Americans selling their art are proud of their work, but prices can sometimes be politely negotiated, especially in the off seasons. They will usually offer right away if they’re willing to accept less
On top of the world
Santa Fe is 7,000 feet above sea level, and it may take a day or two to acclimate to the elevation. Keep hydrated, and let your body adapt to less oxygen before attempting any strenuous activity.
Wacky weather
A good hat and sunglasses are daytime essentials (temperatures can reach the 90s, peaking around 1 pm), but be prepared with rain gear and sweaters too: rainstorms and mountain cold spells are also possible.
Stay on track
Driving in Santa Fe, especially the area around the Plaza, is very congested and confusing; watch out for one-way streets and name changes along the way.
Wordly wise
Don’t be afraid to ask for help pronouncing town names – New Mexicans are forgiving and happy to help. (Tip: double “l’s” are pronounced like long “e’s.”)

New Mexico traditionally associates more closely with Spain (which entered New Mexico in 1540) than Mexico.
Fiestas de Santa Fe
A Santa Fe tradition since the 1920s, this September festival commemorates the Spanish re-entry into New Mexico after the 1680 Puebo Revolt. Celebrations include burning Zozobra – a 50-foot marionette set ablaze to alleviate bad feelings.

Pilots from more than 20 countries gather in October for the largest assembly of hot air balloons in the world.
Roswell UFO Festival
In honor of the alleged 1947 UFO crash, thousands descend on this small, southern city over fourth of July weekend for a Mardi Gras atmosphere of costumed aliens, music, and serious UFO lectures.
Christmas
Tens of thousands of farolitos (paper sacks with candles) light Albuquerque’s Old Town Plaza and Santa Fe’s Plaza and Canyon Road. Stroll, carol, and feast on tamales, green chile stew and hot chocolate alongside the locals.
New Mexico State Fair
Head to Albuquerque in September to see everything from livestock and rodeo to Native American dancing at the 320-acre Expo New Mexico. More than 500,000 people attend this annual event.
