New York City Editor Picks

Editor Picks

New Yorkers tend to think their city is the center of the universe and for good reason – the city has long attracted top talent in everything from architecture to cuisine. While the sheer number of things to do makes it impossible (even for life-long residents) to see everything worth seeing, it is more possible to build your itinerary around quintessential “New York” experiences. Let our Editor Picks, hand-selected by Sherman's staff of expert editors, guide you to the best of the Big Apple. Whether you’re trying experimental cuisine at Momofuku, admiring Robert De Niro’s design sense at the Greenwich Hotel, or gaping at the grandeur of the Empire State Building – these are the places that define New York.

Smart Splurge    Great Value
Robert De Niro launched his 88-room destination in his beloved Tribeca last year with little fanfare. That understated approach matches the atmosphere of relaxed luxury in the serene lobby (adorned with expressionistic paintings by the actor’s father), adjacent to a lush Tuscan-style courtyard. A guest might have the sense of visiting a friend’s rustic but elegant villa. You know, the one where the giant subterranean spa boasts a pool and a transplanted 250-year-old Japanese farmhouse? That one. No two rooms are alike, but all have primo Dux beds, hand-loomed Tibetan silk rugs, and oak floors. Hudson River views and a lantern-lit swimming pool, two rarities in New York hotels, make the prices easier to swallow.

This well located, 135-room boutique hotel offers luxury amenities and a trendy atmosphere at a modest price. With jazzy touches like zebra-print pillows and upholstered day chairs, and fancy extras like Frette linens, down comforters, and iPod docking stations, you’d think they’d have sprung for double-paned windows. They haven’t, so the rooms facing Park Avenue South are assaulted with the drone of Manhattan traffic, but for the price and location, and amongst the fashionable set who stay there, it’s worth the sacrifice.
