North Africa: Countries

The countries of North Africa all have their share of archeological treasures, desert-scapes, ancient towns and sparkling coastline. Whilst Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt attract high tourist numbers, Algeria and Libya, both of which have recently re-opened their doors to tourists, have a quieter appeal.

Morocco Morocco offers sparkling Mediterranean and wild Atlantic coastlines, trekking in the Atlas Mountains, and lively cities where rambling medinas meet slick boutique hotels and chic nightclubs. See our Morocco, Fez, and Marrakech Travel Guides

Algeria Devastated by civil war in the nineties, Algeria is not without its problems today. If you exercise caution and avoid the trouble spots in Algiers and the Northwest however, you’ll find beautiful coastline, neolithic cave paintings, and the most outstanding Saharan landscapes in the region.

Tunisia Thousands of package tourists head for Tunisia each year to sizzle on its Mediterranean beaches, but head away from the coast and you’ll find Roman ruins, a vibrant tribal culture, and a rich desert landscape that has inspired many a Hollywood filmmaker.

Libya Libya opened up to tourism in 2003 after the lifting of UN sanctions. Some 90-percent of the country is covered by the Sahara desert, making this the perfect place to indulge in Lawrence of Arabia fantasies. It’s not just about the sand though – Libya has some of the most impressive collection of Roman ruins in the Mediterranean.

Egypt Travelers have been coming to gawk at ancient treasures and cruise down the Nile for centuries. Experiencing Egypt’s iconic monuments comes at a price though: you’ll have to share them with hoards of tourists, hawkers, and guides. See our Egypt, and Cairo Travel Guides
