Go walking, hiking, and sunbathing in summer, and snowboarding, skiing and sledding in winter at Oslo’s excellent Tryvann Winter Park. Ramble down any of the 14 walking trails and you’ll sense you’re in the middle of nowhere, even though the city is but ten minutes away.

This restored ironworks, dating to 1610, is just 20 minutes from the city center. In addition to scores of charming stores, galleries, and workshops selling Norwegian crafts, art, jewelry, and design products, you’ll discover lovely cafés and restaurants.

A great way to get a taste of the Norwegian fjords, the “Norway in a Nutshell” tour includes four spectacular train journeys, a magnificent fjord cruise, and a nail-biting bus ride. It’s doable in one long day, or you can break off from the group and rejoin the next day.

Beautiful Bergen is Norway’s most picturesque city, with its moody harbor and medieval, UNESCO World Heritage-listed Bryggen wharf – ramshackle wooden buildings hidden behind gabled brick edifices, housing souvenir stores, craft shops, and galleries. Feast on seafood for lunch at Bergen Fishmarket.

Norway’s oldest town, Tønsberg is a popular getaway spot for Norwegians and is especially lively in the summer. Buzz around town at plenty of museums and old Viking graves, or just relax and enjoy the bucolic surrounding countryside.

The beautiful seaside town of Drøbak is the official hometown of Santa Claus, making it a must-visit for families. Take your time and explore the narrow streets, with their quaint little wooden houses, and take a boat to the nearby island fortress.
