Oslo’s nightlife is one of Scandinavia’s most interesting, with some of the globe’s best DJs regularly jetting into town and a thriving jazz scene regarded as one of the world’s best. All ages are welcome in bars by day, but at night it’s over 18 only. Cover charges may apply on weekends.

Attracting a real mix of locals, young and cold, casual and chic, this industrial-looking club is one of the world’s top jazz spots. Weeknights are strictly jazz, though weekends see dance music that’s as diverse as the crowd.

This funky café-bar (daytime and weeknights) and dance club (late on weekends) is the place to head for world-class DJs and interesting live music. The open-air backyard is lovely in the summer (and heated in the winter).

This vibrant world music venue offers a stimulating program of performances from musicians from around the globe. Expect to see anything from Cuban salsa to Argentine tango.

While beer lovers can work their way through the bar’s 129 brands of beer, arty types can take in the bohemian atmosphere – the bar has been frequented by Oslo’s writers, artists, and working class since 1887.

While the beer-soaked floors and smoky aromas might not appeal, the excellent lineup of rock, alternative, and indie bands – from Norway and the world (many from the USA) – should. Expect anyone from Stephen Malkmus to the Sex Pistols.

This grand old building dating to 1931 is home to the Norwegian National Opera and the Norwegian National Ballet (performances alternate), and is the main venue for opera, operettas and ballet.
