Oslo’s shopping scene may not be as sexy as other Scandinavian cities, with their innovative design products and sleek contemporary furniture, yet Oslo’s specialties have their own quaint homegrown charms. Look out for rustic handicrafts, hand-painted wooden bowls, hand-knit woolen sweaters, traditional souvenirs, and pewter, silver, enamel, and glass house wares.

Pleasantly sprawled along the waterfront of Oslo’s former shipyards, in a series of interconnected, postmodern buildings, this small shopping mall is a local favorite for its 65 shops, including chic boutiques, cafés, bars, and a cinema complex.

Oslo’s swankiest department store, the largest in Norway, is the place to head for stylish fashion and cosmetics, as well as Nordic specialties like chunky handmade woolen sweaters, seal skin boots, and traditional costumed dolls.

If you only have time for one souvenir shop, make it William Schmidt, around since 1853. Here you’ll find some of the city’s finest gifts and souvenirs, from stylish, hand-knit, Dale of Norway woollies to carved-wooden-model Viking ships.

Established in 1957 following a hugely successful Norwegian arts and crafts expo that had toured the world, this is Oslo’s best folk art and handicraft store, with the work of local artists and artisans for sale.

If you prefer to take home edible souvenirs, or simply want to buy some picnic supplies, make your way to Oslo’s best-loved delicatessen for a wide variety of delicious cheeses, smoked salmon, cold meats, and home-made jams and preserves.

This neighborhood vintage clothing boutique is one of Oslo’s hippest, specializing in vintage fashion from the 1950s through to the 1980s, along with funky, locally produced, printed T-shirts.
