Pacific Northwest Tips

Trail time
Plan ahead to trek the trails of your choice: Many National parks operate a first-come, first-serve permit system for hiking and camping within their boundaries. Check the Plan Your Visit section of each park site for details.
Rain on your parade
Pack your rainwear. From Hoh Rainforest on the Olympic Peninsula to B.C.’s Haida Gwaii archipelago, this is one region where you’re going to want your galoshes, even in summer.
Hot and cold
Pack warm clothes. Although the Pacific Northwest has a reputation for rainforests, eastern Washington and Oregon are high desert and that means cold nights (temperatures can drop to mid 40s in summer; low 20s in winter).
Dividing line
If crossing the border between the U.S. and Canada, try to get there as early in the morning as possible to avoid delays. Expect the worst delays on Friday and Sunday nights.
Hail not
It’s illegal for taxis to pick up passengers in Seattle, so call ahead for your ride.
On the menu
Celebrating the freshest and most wholesome produce from the region, Pacific Northwest cuisine features boat-fresh seafood, fine beef, artisan cheeses, hazelnuts, raspberries, blackberries, marionberries, and local wines like Pinot Noir and Reisling.
Bite of Oregon
Sink your teeth into fresh produce and mouthwatering entrées, washed down by the Beaver State’s best brews and vintages. Over 100 items are on the menu at this delicious mid-August showcase event.
Festive Seattle
With everything from the famed SEAFAIR, with its races, derbies, and contests, to jazz, blues, and arts events like the International Film Festival, Seattle has more than 60 festivals to keep the city celebrating.
Symphony Splash
Come August, canoes, kayaks, and small boats crowd Victoria’s Inner Harbour and crowds fill the harbor’s walkways, for the annual waterborne classical and pops symphony performance, staged from a barge.
Leave no footprint
The Pacific Northwest’s major cities and college towns display a definite green tinge. Sustainable architecture and environmental design are buzzwords in Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland, with Portland leading the country in numbers of LEED environmentally certified buildings.
