Jordan’s stunning sandstone city of Petra hardly needs an introduction: The sight of The Treasury revealing itself at the end of a canyon-like gorge is perhaps Jordan’s most iconic image. This UNESCO-protected site (and recent inductee to the New Seven Wonders of the World) spreads out over some 40 miles – an area so large, you’d actually need four days to see it all – but highlights like the Treasury, Monastery, and Roman-influenced colonnades, however, can be seen in a single day.
