Take scenic landscapes of rolling hills, some of Italy’s best wine and food, and outdoorsy ops galore . . . that’s Piedmont (Piemonte, in Italian). Backed by the French and Swiss Alps in northwest Italy, this fertile region is “at the foot of the mountains”, as its name translates, with a year-round roster of activities. Winter brings alpine sports, especially around the major ski resort of Sestriere and Turin, the 2006 host of the Winter Olympics and home to a well-preserved Baroque center. In warm weather months, tour the wine country around historic towns of Alba and Asti, with vineyard-covered hills, truffle fields, dense forests, and ancient castles.
