Playa del Carmen Neighborhoods

Neighborhoods

The center of Playa del Carmen is the downtown area, La Quinta. Nearly all hotels and tourist facilities are located here and in Playacar just to the south. If you’re looking for the town’s more authentic character, head to the north or to the west, where street food stalls and family-run bodegas are still commonplace.

La Quinta
Quinta Avenida, also called Fifth Avenue, is a (mostly) pedestrian-only avenue parallel to the beach. This is the main tourist drag of Playa del Carmen and home to the zócalo (town square). It’s also chock-a-bloc with hotels, tiny shops, and restaurants.
Playacar
This brand new coastal development to the south of downtown Playa del Carmen is home to a dozen or so major resorts, a golf course, and luxury residential complexes.
Avenida Juárez
Running from the zócalo to Highway 307, this wide street leads west from the beaches to the more authentic Mexican areas of town where you can still find a good fish taco. Very few tourists venture this way unless they’re leaving town, though it’s perfectly safe.
North of Downtown
Above 28th street downtown fades to a trickle and the resorts disappear. Seeking solitude and/or great sunbathing opportunities? The best beaches, including Xcalacoco, and lightest crowds can be found here.
