Portland Tips

Take the MAX
The MAX Light Rail’s redline will take you from Portland International Airport into the heart of downtown in 37 minutes for only $2.
Enjoy an outrageous boat trip
A great way to experience Portland’s beautiful surroundings is via motorboat; whip down the Willamette River to the Columbia River, but be warned: you will get wet.
Ride For Free
In downtown Portland, all mass transit – buses, light rail, streetcar, and vintage trolley – is free.
Know your quadrants
Portland is divided into four quadrants: NW, NE, SW and SE. Burnside is the dividing line between north and south while the Willamette River splits the city into east and west.
The fifth dimension
Sandwiched between the Northwest and Northeast quadrants is largely residential North Portland, sometimes called the “fifth quadrant” and also referred to by locals as NoPo.
Dress in layers
In general, it’s hot and dry in Portland from June through September while the ubiquitous rainy season casts gloom over the city the rest of the year. Bring a light jacket, even in summertime, but don’t be surprised by the occasional winter day when a hat and gloves aren’t necessary.
The smoking gun
In June 2007, lawmakers passed a bill that effectively outlaws smoking in bars and restaurants. The smoking ban went into effect on January 1, 2009.
