Porto Tips

Ride the vintage tram
Catching the 1930s-era tram from the Ribeira along the Douro River and all the way to the seaside suburb of Foz is touristy but lots of fun.
Fantasporto Film Festival
If you find yourself in Porto in wintertime, don’t miss this ten-day film extravaganza usually scheduled around late February/early-March.
Porto Card
A great-value card gets you discounts at attractions, restaurants and shops, starting at €3.50 for a one-day walker version and running up to €15.50 for a three-day card with unlimited transport; it’s available at tourist offices and travel agents.
Porto Tours
The city’s best tour operator offers everything from guided walks to bus tours and from wine excursions to Douro cruises.
Port Tasting
The Instituto dos Vinhos do Duoro e Porto website maintains a full list (and map) of the 50 or so porto wine lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia; click on “Historical Center” under the “Visit the Region” tab to get yours.
The language
Most young people speak English and are best to approach if needing directions. That said, it doesn’t hurt to pack a Portuguese phrasebook.
