Positano Day Trips

Make the trip to this picturesque town, loved by writers, artists, and musicians like Wagner, DH Lawrence, and Gore Vidal. The 13th-century Palazzo Sasso hotel is a must for its Rosselinis restaurant.

The hardy traveler can easily get down here and back in a day, though total travel time each way is about 3.5 hours. But the fantastic ruined city of Pompeii, unearthed from the volcanic ash of Mount Vesuvius is worth it. No other archeological site gives you as much of a feel of what it must have been like to live in the Roman empire. A world heritage site.

Less-known than neighboring Pompeii, this site is another Roman time-capsule. Unlike ash-buried Pompeii, Herculaneum was buried under a sea of mud. Everything was fossilized, even some of the goods in the shops.

Stylish Capri lures visitors by day with its shimmering Blue Lagoon and jet-setters by night with its rich nightlife. Boats leave for the grotto early in the morning.

Though Capri may be more popular, the volcanic island of Ischia is arguably more beautiful. Calm beaches, natural thermal springs, and a mild climate year-round add to the island's charms.

Rising over Naples, this distinctive landmark is most famous for burying Roman cities Pompeii and Herculaneum. Hike to the summit and walk round the crater.

The best views of Positano can be had from Montepertuso, a small, peaceful village amidst scores of olives groves. Visit the small piazza, church, and romantic restaurants before taking the refreshing, hour-long walk back to Positano.
