Smart Splurge    Great Value
Travelers looking for affordable, friendly accommodations in Prague can’t do much better than the Arcadia Residence. More of an apart-hotel than a guest house, the Arcadia contains a range of individual apartments in the lovely and un-touristy area of Vyšehrad, just two metro stops from Old Town. Studio apartments, spotless and well-sized at 323 square feet, are great for solo travelers or couples, while well-equipped double room apartments, occupying 646 square feet, are ideal for families and feature separate lounge areas. In-room breakfasts are delivered by the property’s gracious staff at any hour; the owners delight in assisting their guests with itineraries and recommendations for dining, sightseeing, and transportation.

Near Wenceslas Square, the property contains 31 spacious guest rooms and suites with plush designer beds. Breakfast, included in the room rate, is happily served at any hour of the day in the Jet Set restaurant. Come happy hour, the Icon’s sleek lounge and bar is a fashionable spot for a cocktail. There isn’t much here that’s traditionally Czech; this hip hotel could be in any European capital. In the next year or two, the city will likely see a new crop of trendy boutique hotels like the Icon.

Just because you’re on a budget doesn’t mean you need to stay in a hostel devoid of local flavor. Friendly Czech Hana Seflova rents out two lovely apartments in her home in the residential neighborhood of Dejvice, near Prague Castle; countless positive reviews means that travelers now need to book well ahead of time. Each apartment features two rooms, a kitchenette, wireless internet, and cable television; guests also have access to a washing machine and a pretty backyard. Since four to five people can be comfortably accommodated in one apartment, Hana’s B&B is an excellent value for families. A number of trams and the metro transport guests to downtown in about ten minutes.

The exceptionally attentive staff, always happy to help guests plan itineraries and get the most out of a vacation, and the large, clean guest rooms make the Bridge B&B a great-value accommodation option. The renovated antique property houses eight rooms (the large, old-fashioned bathtubs are a special treat). The bridge referred to in the hotel’s title isn’t, as some expect, the Charles Bridge, but the Jiráskův bridge a little further down the river. Old Town Square and downtown attractions are a fifteen minute walk away, but that’s not necessarily a drawback. The neighborhood is full of shops and restaurants frequented by locals, which means that prices cater to Czechs, not tourists with foreign currency to burn.

Shop with the locals for bargain shoes and household goods. Think low-brow department stores, fast food chains, and communist-style holdovers. Popular home furnishing store, Le Patio, is also a French restaurant.
