Fifteen all-inclusive, low-rise resorts line this beach east of Puerto Plata. Top draws include a beautiful tawny beach, top-ranked golf course, casinos, and restaurants.
Zona Colonial
The government and private sector are gradually restoring Puerto Plata’s old section. It offers Spanish Colonial forts, a treasure trove of Victorian architecture, and a particularly pleasant malecón (seaside boardwalk).
Puerto Plata
Outside of the Zona Colonial there is not much to explore in Puerto Plata – the rest of the city is entirely residential and semi-industrial.
Cofresi/Maimón
West of Puerto Plata, both of these resort and residential development enclaves front lovely beaches. Cofresi’s activity focuses around the mammoth marine park, Ocean World.
Caberete
Less than a half hour east of Puerto Plata, Cabarete is celebrated for its boho feel and perpetual “spring break” beachfront, bar scene. Windsurfing and funky hotels are both popular lures.
Sosúa
A thriving expat population (including many displaced Jews from the '40s) lends international flavor to this at turns ravishing, at turns ramshackle, town bisected by a sublime cove.
