Quebec City Neighborhoods

Neighborhoods

In a city filled with history and romance, it’s easy to let yourself get a little lost. But the different neighborhoods of Quebec City are so accessible and within walking distance from each other that you can let yourself just wander. Whether you’re looking for old-world charm, modern design, more a bohemian vibe, or as many shops and boutiques as you can throw your credit card at, you’ll find it in La Capitale (the capital city of the province of Quebec).

Haute-Ville (Upper Town)
The narrow, cobbled roads of this district climb and plunge, making sturdy walking shoes a necessity.
Vieux-Quebec (Old Quebec)
Many of the city’s historical landmarks can be found within the walls of Old Quebec. The ramparts themselves are something to behold, the only city fortifications still standing on the continent outside Mexico.
Saint-Jean-Baptiste
Just outside the walls, this gritty, working-class neighborhood has grown up into a bastion for artists and intellectuals, who hole up in the many cafés that dot the area.
Basse-Ville (Lower Town)
Allegedly the oldest district in North America, its buildings date back as far as the 17th century.
Vieux-Port (Old Port)
Experience the early days of New France, where a fur trading post was set up at the intersection of the Saint-Charles and Saint-Lawrence rivers. The area is bustling with merchants.
Quartier Petit-Champlain
Quaint, cobbled roads lined with boutiques, art galleries, and cafés make up this quarter, at the center of which is a pedestrian walk by the same name.
Saint-Roch
Artists flocked here in the 1980s and so, naturally, designer flagships and condo highrises followed. It’s one of the few areas in the city boasting sleek modern architecture.
