Quebec City Tips

Speak French
Try your hand at the language of love and the locals will love you for it. Picking up a French-English dictionary or phrasebook can help you better understand and enjoy your surroundings. Of course, fear not, most people in the service industry understand English.
Economuseums
These museum-cum-boutiques promote the arts and artisans of yesteryear. For a nominal fee, you can usually get a guided tour from the shop owner. In and around Quebec City you’ll find wood sculpture, blacksmithing, stained glass, and porcelain doll economuseums, among others.
Museum Card
C$40 buys you admission to 23 museums, a two-day unlimited bus pass and discounts at a number of museum gift shops and restaurants, which you can enjoy over a span of three days.
Funiculaire
If you can stomach heights, this is a great way to travel from Terrace Dufferin to Quartier Petit-Champlain, Place-Royale, and the Old Port. C$1.75 admission
One-Day Bus Pass
Just C$5.95 buys you unlimited rides for the day, as well as a free ride for a friend on weekends.
Carnaval de Québec
February can be one of the harshest months to be in Quebec City, but it’s worth braving the cold to experience the French-Canadian version of carnival, a festival of ice sculptures, sleigh rides, and everything wintry. 866-422-7628; www.carnaval.qc.ca
Festival de la Gastronimie
With all the wild game, fresh fish, and farm-to-table cuisine to be had, true epicureans are drawn to Quebec City. And what better time to visit than the week in late April when the whole town goes gourmet? 418-683-4150; www.crq.ca
La Griffe de l’aventure
This is one of the many places to rent outdoor camping and winter sports equipment. Want to try your hand (or foot) at snowshoeing? How about snowmobiling? Now is the time and Quebec is the place! 638 Rue Saint-Vallier O.; 418-529-8884
Route Verte
Go green! The longest bike path in all of North America, the Route Verte (green route), is made up of a network of some 2,670 miles of greenways that crisscross the most beautiful parts of the province of Quebec. www.routeverte.com
