Reno Neighborhoods

Neighborhoods

Reno’s tract homes and strip malls radiate outward from a downtown core. Bounded by mountains, the Truckee River and I-80 bisects the city into north and south, while I-395 divides it into east and west. Although the town lacks the definitive neighborhoods that comprise larger cities, the area can be roughly divided into a few different areas.

Downtown
Downtown Reno is hotel and casino land, the area where visitors are most likely to spend their time.
University Area
This neighborhood, which is situated south of downtown, centers around the University of Nevada and caters mainly to students. Cal Avenue is known for its boutique shops.
Old Reno
Cute, leafy Old Reno, with its '20s, brick cottages, is wealthier and more traditionally suburban than its university neighbor. It offers an array of dining, shopping, and entertainment options.
West Reno
The mainly residential, west side of town boasts posh, gated McMansion developments.
South Meadow
Located in the southernmost part of the city, this upscale, residential neighborhood lures visitors with high-end hotels and close proximity to golf courses, national parks, spas, and casinos.
North Valleys
Situated about 20 minutes north of Reno, North Valleys is a quiet, rural destination. Its main claim to fame is the Sierra Safari Zoo.
Sparks
Sparks is to Reno what Cambridge is to Boston – a separate, yet integrated, city located just to the west. Casinos, hotels, and restaurants are the main draws.
South Reno
Up-and-coming South Reno is close to the Mount Rose Highway (the popular connector from Reno to Tahoe), and is the gateway to the following ski resorts: Mount Rose, Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, and Heavenly.
