Though this region is overlooked by foreigners, it’s one of France’s most popular domestic destinations and high season unfurls here like it does everywhere else in France: with big crowds and high prices.
Off Season: January to March
Winter in the Rhone Valley is marked by cheap hotel rates, long winter nights and short days, but Lyon’s bouchons and markets bustle year round and make for ideal foodie getaways from frostier northern reaches of France and the icy northeastern U.S.
Sweet Spot: October to December; April to May
Though the vendange (wine harvest) brings in a handful of tourists in October and November, the summer throngs are gone and prices are often discounted. In April and May, both temperatures and prices are pleasant.
