Rome Great Values

Great Values

Some of the best things in life can be, if not free, at least surprisingly affordable. Here, we zero in on the inexpensive, yet unforgettable, Roman restaurants, hotels, shops, and day trips that are as euro-friendly as they are fun.

Smart Splurge    Great Value
This Trastevere hotel is a hidden Eternal City gem. All rooms are on the ground floor and look out onto the leafy orange-tree-laden courtyard, which also makes for a peaceful breakfast setting before pushing off to see the sights. The simple, but comfortable rooms – decked out with exposed brick and oak furniture – make for a quiet oasis, reminiscent of the building’s past as a former Renaissance-era cloister. One unique perk the Santa Maria offers is free bicycles for guests The Trastevere location – arguably Rome’s most attractive neighborhood thanks to its narrow alleyways flanked with wine bars and boutiques – is worth the price of a room alone.

This tiny 24-room inn is a good bet for its small-ish but tasteful and comfortable rooms with hardwood floors, satellite TV, and wi-fi. But guests don’t necessarily book at the Cavalieri for amenities: It’s all about the location. Set on a narrow cobbled alleyway that’s wedged between the Colosseum, the Forum, and busy Via Cavour, this three-star hotel is within walking distance of a handful of the city’s major tourist attractions. The rooftop terrace is a nice retreat from the city and the perfect place to bring a bottle of wine and take in Rome from above.
