San Diego Great Values

Great Values

Making the most of your vacation in picturesque, beach-y San Diego doesn’t have to mean pulling out all of the stops when it comes to cash. Here, we zero in on the attractions, restaurants, hotels, and shops that are as fun as they are affordable. Explore a Mexican-flavored village, treat yourself more to hearty Italian cuisine at Trattoria Fantastica, and nab big bargains at the Viejas Outlet Center – all while keeping your budget-conscience clean.

Smart Splurge    Great Value
Renovated in 2006, the Sofia is one of downtown’s most affordable boutique hotels. The Italianate palette of tans and greens, accented with dark-wood furniture, is cozy and soothing. Rooms  come with flat-screen TVs, refrigerators, and pillow-top mattresses; bathrooms, with basin sinks, are to die for.

This luxe hotel, located across from the convention center, lets music diehards live the dream of immersive fandom in a way they never could at the Hard Rock Café. The lobby is a futuristic museum of rock history, showcasing memorable lyrics alongside paraphernalia. The 420 rooms showcase custom furniture and original art, but seventeen individually designed Rock Star Suites, with their killer sound systems and party-sized tubs, make guests feel like international celebrities on tour – minus the option of trashing the place, of course.

Tucked amid the Gaslamp Quarter’s clubs and restaurants, this allegedly haunted 132-room Victorian-era hideaway was taken down and reconstructed, brick by brick, in the late ’70s and early ’80s. Rooms   are furnished with antiques and gas fireplaces, and the hotel offers high tea on Saturday afternoons in Ida Bailey’s Restaurant, named after an infamous madam who worked two blocks away, back when the area was known for its disreputable activity.

Tijuana
Go south of the border for discount shopping, cultural exhibits, and wild bar hopping. Take the trolley from downtown San Diego ($3) to the border, walk across, and bring your passport for easy reentry. Nights can be sketchy, so party in San Diego.
