Sherman's Expert Review

La Valencia's location alone is nothing short of spectacular: nestled cliffside in the upscale La Jolla neighborhood, the hotel's distinctive gold-domed tower is a prime spot for gazing at stunning sea views and coastal mountain vistas. Opened in 1926, La Valencia evokes a timeless sense of class, recallingmore the days when moneyed elite and Hollywood luminaries such as Charlie Chaplin and Groucho Marx were among its avid devotees. Modern-day visitors will be just as captivated by La Valencia, however, after walking through the palm-shaded front patio and into the hotel's lobby, where magnificent floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the Pacific. The 117 rooms are all designed with a sumptuous European flair, though some may find them a bit dated. Standard rooms and suites range in size, but are all spacious, and furnished with queen or king beds, floral headboards, gold chandeliers, fringed curtains, and marble bathrooms. The newer, sun-filled ocean villas are the size of one- or two-bedroom apartments, and are lavishly appointed with beamed ceilings, marble floors, hand-painted Mexican tiles, and fireplaces.

This hotel was awesome.  It was roomy and had a great view of the beach.  For the week I was down there.  It's just awesome...  A great place to stay.

Technically, I didn't stay here. A couple of colleagues and I (fellow student government, student senators) visited San Diego State University and UCSD for a leadership conference. La Jolla is gorgeous, our advisor later informed us that this was a... more

This bastion of gentility does a fine job of resurrecting elegance from the golden age, when celebrities like Greta Garbo and Charlie Chaplin vacationed here. The blufftop hotel, which looks much like a Mediterranean villa, has been the centerpiece... more

We stayed here because my friend got married here on 7-7-07.  It was a cute hotel. Everyone was super friendly.  Coming from the Marmont, there was some tough competition.  However, with our ocean view it was great.  The rooms were very small.... more

"We returned after 18 years..."

We had our wedding reception here 18 years ago (and still live in San Diego) and came back to spend a night to walk down memory lane (without the post-marriage kids). Got an incredible deal...$200/night for a non-view queen room. On the positive... more

I've never stayed here, so I can't tell you about the rooms or the staff, but I CAN tell you that this is the best place, if visiting La Jolla for the day, to use the bathroom. Really! You just walk on in; no one will ask any questions. And if... more
