Sherman's Expert Review

For a hip scene in downtown San Diego, the W is the place to go. Whether you're there to hang out or just to sleep, the stylish hotel's quirky style is sure to appeal. The rooftop Beach Lounge comes complete with heated sand, three cabañas, a fire pit, two full-service bars, and a scantily cladmore clientele. You'll also find other fun design touches here, like a pool surrounded by blue Astroturf and hanging planters. And, for chic and tasty eateries, the W is home to the sultry Living Room, a lounge that serves light cuisine and cocktails, and a signature restaurant, Rice, which serves contemporary global fare. The rooms although comparable in size to cruise-ship cabins, are done up in cool modern decor, with soothing colors and super-sleek white furnishings. The beds here all feature pillow-top mattresses, plush linens, and goose-down comforters. High-tech gadgets abound, too, like cable TV with HBO; movies on demand; DVD player; CD player; high-speed Internet access; dual-line cordless phones; and a CD and DVD library open 24/7.

"We really enjoyed our stay!"

We did not get to the hotel until almost midnight. The bellman warmly greeted us and there was someone right there to help with check in. We dropped off our luggage and went straight the the Beach, a rooftop bar. It was so relaxing, just whaty we... more

The new "W" combines 60's and 70's surf culture, with the posh modern look that is a popular trend amongst lounges. In the main room, I really liked the surfboard fin art near the ceiling, reminded me of the Beach Boys or something you might see in... more

The W took the city by storm when it opened in 2003, delivering swanky nightlife beyond the Gaslamp Quarter. Rooms are bright and cheery -- like mod beach cabanas beamed into downtown, replete with a sexy shower. Nouveau nautique is the theme, with... more

Cool hotel. Parking is a problem because you and your guest will have to pay. The suite is really nice they gave us a bottle of champagne. The service is also good. I love staying here its a fun hotel to be in.

"Very Nice Hotel!"

Staff and service were excellent! The rooms were unique, very comfortable and clean! Although this hotel seems to cater more to a younger crowd, we enjoyed our stay. Wish the pool area was larger and not so obstructed to the sun and sky. Would... more

"Would have been good..."

Well, we were turned away when we tried to check in because they said they were full. Funny, seeing as how we were charged in full already. Long story short, we were incredulous but they made it up to us the next day when we came back for the rest... more

Modern does not equal luxury.  The pool is tiny, feels like an afterthought.  The rooms are on the small side too.We needed two beds, they offered to make-up the window sill.  Yeah, seriously.  Sleeping on this thing should not be considered... more

"One of the worst hotel experiences ever"

For the money, this should have been a near-perfect experience. It was very, very far from perfect. I encountered many maintainence and cleanliness issues during my 4-night stay at the W. The staff put on a show of caring about these issues, but I... more
