Four oceanfront areas harbor most of San Juan’s lodging options, starting with Isla Verde, which is home to many of the island’s upscale digs and casinos (the only drawback here is the proximity to the airport, which can be noisy – on the plus side, this means you don’t have far … more to go upon arrival). Those seeking a more intimate beach retreat do better down the road in the Ocean Park neighborhood, where the hotels are smaller and quieter. Condado, just west, is the locus of several recent resort renovations, while Old San Juan, where most of the sightseeing unfolds, occupies an island about four miles west of the airport. Though charming, Old San Juan is a 15-minute drive from the nearest beach and traffic and noise at night can be clamorous. High season prices range from $95 on the low end to over $500 on the high end.
