Chile is ubiquitous and comes in green and red (the former is hotter than the latter). If you’re not up for the heat, order your chile on the side. Unsure? Order “Christmas,” a mix of the two.
Culture shock
In spite of its name, New Mexico traditionally associates more closely with Spain (which entered the territory in 1540) than with Mexico. Don't expect sarapes and sombreros in New Mexico.
Bargain savvy
Native American artists are proud of their work, but prices can sometimes be politely negotiated, especially in the off seasons. They will usually offer right away if they’re willing to accept less.
On top of the world
Santa Fe is 7,000 feet above sea level, and it may take a day or two to acclimate to the elevation. Your body will crave oxygen and water if you’re coming from lower altitudes, don’t over-exert yourself and drink plenty of water.
Keep cool
Daytime temperatures can reach the 90s, peaking between noon and 4pm; bring a good hat and sunglasses to keep the sun off.
Stay on track
Driving in Santa Fe, especially the area around the Plaza, is very congested and confusing; watch out for one-way streets and name changes along the way.
