Neighborhoods

The Denny Party, who journeyed from Oregon to Seattle, settled the area in 1851. Today, with a population of 586,200, Seattle is the nation’s 23rd largest city. It’s made up over 100 neighborhoods, with new ones on the horizon as the city continues to develop. Here are the mainstays:

Downtown/Belltown
Locally owned boutiques and flagship department stores share street space, blending old and new. Belltown offers plenty of shopping, dining, and clubbing.
Ballard
Originally settled in the 1850s by Scandinavian immigrants, today Ballard is full of hip shops, galleries, restaurants, and pubs.
Capitol Hill
For years it’s been the center of Seattle’s gay and lesbian scene. No shortage of restaurants, bars, clubs, and coffeehouses in this ‘hood of grand mansions.
International District
Locals call this melting pot of Asian restaurants, markets, and specialty shops the "ID." Visit the Wing Luke Asian Museum and the Uwajimaya Asian Food and Gift Market.
Fremont
Visit the Fremont Troll, a controversial bronze statue of Vladimir Lenin, and the Fremont Market, a Euro-style flea market held every Sunday.
Pioneer Square
Seattle’s birthplace is evidenced by its 19th-century, brick buildings. Catch the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field and the Seattle Seahawks at the adjacent Qwest Field.
