Singapore Local Tips

English everywhere
Don't worry about packing a phrasebook – not only is English one of Singapore's official languages, nearly everyone speaks it. Daily newspapers and TV stations also broadcast in English.
Go lightweight
Singapore is a walking city so wear lightweight, cotton clothes, and comfortable shoes. If you are going to be spending any length of time outdoors, protect yourself from the sun with a summer hat and sunglasses.
Strict fines
Heed the warning signs on streets, in buildings, and on public transportation or risk being booked with a ticket up to $710 for smoking, littering, jay walking, spitting…even chewing gum.
Customs & immigration
Don't try to smuggle any drugs out of Singapore – drug trafficking carries a mandatory death sentence. Although one liter of duty-free liquor is allowed, cigarettes or tobacco are not. A clean look will you get you through immigration quickly.
No tipping
Not only is tipping not necessary, Singapore authorities actually frown on it as a 10-percent service charge is already added to bills in all hotels and restaurants. Even taxi drivers will return your change.
WiFi
Netizens can web-surf on personal laptops at over 7,200 hotspots in public areas, including most restaurants. Log on to www.ida.gov.sg to register free with local providers.
Taxi
MaxiCab, a 6-seater taxi shuttle service from Changi airport, operates from 6am to midnight, stopping at designated places downtown. Cost: $5 for adults; $3.5 for kids.
