St. Lucia Outdoor Activities

Overview

Sunning on the beach is a no-brainer and sampling loads of Caribbean cuisine is a must-do, but you’ll want to shake off your sun-and-food coma by inspiring your active side. Connoisseurs of outdoor activities will be satisfied with the island’s offerings, which range from golfing to zip-lining.

Smart Splurge    Great Value
Hike the Pitons
With 19,000 acres of mountains and valleys, hiring a certified guide is a smart move for navigation and a must for difficult trails that climb more than 2,600-feet up Gros Piton. The smaller (and steeper) Petit Piton is the more challenging and best for experienced climbers. Scaling the taller Gross Piton takes 2 hours each way for the super-fit. The reward is the magnificent views to the south and north, with the neighboring islands of St. Vincent and Martinique clearly visible. Start in the early morning (by 7am) to get a jump on the heat.

Windsurf
The wind and the choppy Atlantic Ocean at the Anse des Sables and Vieux Fort beaches is optimum for propelling experienced windsurfers through the waters. Lessons are available for the uninitiated and equipment for rent is provided at nearby hotels and outfitters.

Boat Tours
Day trips on Endless Summer’s 56-foot catamarans depart from the north and glide south, passing coastal villages, stopping for volcano-watching and waterfall bathing near Soufrière, lunching at the historic Fond Doux Estate, and ending with a Marigot Bay tour. Sunset cruises include dinner and entertainment, and there’s rum punch for all.

Bike Off-Road
Both novice and advanced bike riders can be picked up from their resort or cruise ship to take the 12-mile bike-hike off-roading tour that passes 18th century sugar and cocoa plantations in Anse Mamin, near Soufrière. Stops are made for a picnic lunch during the half-day (approximately 4-hour) excursion.

Golf great value
In Gros Islet's northern Cap Estate region, the St. Lucia Golf & Country Club is the island's only 18-hole course with both Atlantic and Caribbean views and a 350-yard driving range. Transport to the emerald course is free from most resorts or cruise ships, and green fees are reasonable ($100 for nine holes in high season).

Snorkel / Scuba Dive
The west coast is tops for discovering the denizens of the deep. Dive in Anse Cochon’s warm, blue-water reef to witness tropical fish hiding in sunken freighter’s nooks and crannies. For snorkeling, Anse La Raye is the place to spend the day – bring an underwater camera to capture angel, parrot, and trumpetfish posing in their natural environment.
