St. Lucia Shopping

Overview

St. Lucia isn’t known as a shopping locale, save for locally-made arts and crafts, batiks, and silk-screened pieces. Many residents fly or sail to nearby Martinique for heavy-duty purchases (like furniture and appliances), but patronize the markets and stores in Castries for food and knickknacks. more Visitors can find good buys on duty-free jewelry and liquor if they’ve done their homework beforehand. Most shops open at 8:30am and close at 4:30pm (nearly all are closed Sundays).

Smart Splurge    Great Value
Bagshaw Studios smart splurge
This family-owned linen company's original shop and studio sits high on a hill above Castries. Weekend workshop tours demonstrate how designs are transformed by hand into silk-screened fabrics and then turned into clothing, table runners, place mats, and potholders. There are four Bagshaw boutiques island-wide, including a gift shop at Hewanorra airport.

Castries Central Market
Beginning at 5am on Saturday, this 100-year-old institution is a fascinating scene of bargaining and buying. The produce variety is mind blowing – green oranges, orange lemons, tan limes, avocados (Lucians call them pears), and bananas (called figs). Bringing them home is forbidden, but do feel free to stock up on hot sauces, banana ketchup, and spices.

Marina Village at Marigot Bay
These chic, wooden boutiques are reminiscent of the St. Bart’s retail scene, minus the exorbitant prices. Day trippers and guests of the nearby hotels stroll along the boardwalk, browsing the craft store’s hand-painted plates, mugs, and trays, and the mini-market’s assortment of French wines – be sure to grab a pain au chocolat and cocoa tea from the bakery.

Pointe Seraphine
This popular, Spanish-style, harbor-front shopping mall complex, located within walking distance of downtown Castries, primarily caters to cruise ship patrons. Over 40 shops sell duty-free liquor, designer perfumes, jewelry, china, and cigars to those holding cruise or flight documents. The winter high season brings extended shopping hours (for about an hour later than the normal 5pm closing time), especially when ships are in port.
