Built with convict labor in 1836, the Lord Nelson lays claim as Sydney’s oldest continually licensed pub. The busy bar and brewery occupies the ground floor (try a pint of the black-as-night Nelson’s Blood porter), and a brasserie serves solid meals on the second. The nine Victorian style rooms are on the third and fourth floor, with narrow hallways, creaking floorboards and raw sandstone walls (there’s no elevator to lug your bags). The least expensive units share a tidy bathroom, while others vary in size and position – the corner room overlooking Argyle Street is the prime berth. Coffee-maker, hair dryer, TV, iron and ironing board are the in-room amenities. Though the Rocks district is Sydney’s most touristy neighborhood, the Lord Nelson lies off the beaten path, near Darling Harbour.
